Supreme Court slapped Re 1 fine on senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan

Why in news?

The Supreme Court has found lawyer Prashant Bhushan guilty of contempt of court for two tweets which it said had shaken the “very foundation of constitutional democracy”.

What is the judgement?

-The Supreme Court has imposed Re 1 fine on senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan in connection with a suo motu criminal contempt of court case over his tweets.

-Bhushan should be barred from practicing law for a period of three years and imprisoned for three months if he defaults on paying the fine.

-Freedom of speech can't be curtailed but rights of others need to be respected .
